Free movies, music and TV shows on this Metro trains soon! Check details

New Delhi: From March onwards Chennai metro commuters will be able to enjoy free movies, music and TV shows. Chennai Metro Rail Limited is all set to launch a mobile-based entertainment system in the metro. According to a ToI report, the project is inspired by the inflight infotainment system.

As per the national daily report, commuters will be able to download the app on their smartphones and will be able to access free content once they enter the metro station. It may be noted that the Chennai metro will be the first metro rail service in India to provide this service.

The report quoted an official saying, “We conducted trials in three trains and it was successful. We will launch the service either by end of March or early April. When we launch, we will perhaps be the first metro rail service on the country to have such a facility.”

It may be noted that as of now commuters are not able to access content online since there is no signal on phones underground. Sometimes it takes one hour to reach the destination and passengers can get bored. However, with this new facility, the commuter will not only be able to access movies, music and TV shows during their journey but, they will also be able to download content in HD quality.

According to the national daily report, passengers will be able to access content in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam language. They have the option of either watching the content directly through the app or to download it and watch offline later. Metro is installing servers at stations to facilitate the service.

The official also told the publication that the wireless network for this facility will be different from the one that provides free WiFi service to the commuters. The content will only be accessible through the app and not through the browser. The content will be updated from time to time almost every day.

The official further said, “For providing such a facility, speed is an important factor. We tested the speed during the trials to ensure it is the same across all four coaches of the train. Commuters will be able to download a movie in HD quality in 15 to 20 seconds”. Commuters will also be able to make internet calls in underground tunnels or at underground stations and this will be a major help as there are no mobile network signals underground.
