Concluding months of leaks and rumours, Huawei finally unveiled its first ever foldable smartphone, the Huawei Mate X. This is also the second foldable smartphone we are seeing this year after the Samsung Galaxy Fold that just got launched few days ago. Priced at 2,399 euros, Huawei Mate X will go on sale starting “middle of 2019”. Huawei Mate X is being targeted at heavy users and those who wish to have an ideal multimedia device in their pockets.
The Huawei Mate X has an 8-inch wraparound OLED tablet display when open, and upon closing the device turns into a 6.6-inch screen smartphone. The phone, in folded condition, is about 11mm thick.
It features a 6.6-inch main display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480×1148 pixels resolution when folded.The phone in an unfolded condition has an 8-inch main display with a 8:7.1 aspect ratio and 2480×2200 pixels resolution. The rear display is 6.4-inch (25:9, 2480 x 892) rear display, when folded.
The phone comes powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor and is backed by a 4500mAh battery. There’s also the Huawei’s Balong 5000 5G modem alongside the Kirin processor for faster connectivity and 5G speeds. The phone houses a dual-SIM card slot and users can add Huawei’s Nano Memory Cards. The smartphone ships with 55W super fast charger and Huawei claims it can fast 600% faster than Apple’s most expensive smartphone, the iPhone XS Max.
As showcased during the launch event, the Mate X, unlike what we saw with the Galaxy Fold, has an outward fold. There is also a protruding bar running from top to bottom on one edge of the Mate X that includes the vertical triple rear camera setup. The remaining area is where the folded screen settles-in. What’s worth adding here is that the smartphone is also first by Huawei to support 5G connectivity. The Mate X has top-of-the line specifications given the heavy use case.
