New Delhi: As the cliché of ‘big fat Indian wedding’ goes, there can be no end to the extravaganza, but soon enough there might just be, as the Delhi government is in the works of putting a limit to the number of guests that can be invited for wedding celebrations and other grand parties in the capital city.

According to a report in The Times of India, the Delhi chief secretary told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the government will frame a policy to put a limit on the number of guests and put a check on the availability of food to prevent wastage and avoid traffic congestion.

Taking note of the copious amounts food and water that is wasted at such gatherings, the Supreme Court has said that it is “unacceptable” against the backdrop of the water crisis and alleged starvation deaths the city witnesses.

Appearing before a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur, Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta , Delhi chief secretary Vijay Dev said the government shared the concern expressed by the court and a “balance has to be maintained between the requirements of the rich and the poor” living in the city.

He said some alternatives are being discussed and a two-pronged strategy is also being actively considered so that availability of food and the number of guests at functions is limited. Arrangements to serve the excess food to the poor through NGOs were also discussed.

The chief secretary said a policy could be formulated within six weeks after the management of motels, farm houses and hotels in and around the city are effectively reviewed The court thereafter set a deadline of January 31 for the LG and chief secretary to frame the policy, the report said.
