The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 17 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 17 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway.

The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890.

Eligibility Criteria:

Apprentices:

Educational Qualification: 10th/12th/ITI in the relevant trade from the recognized board/ institution.

Note: Candidates with higher qualification viz, Degree/DIploma and Polytechnic holders/ Engineering graduates are not eligible to apply.

Junior Clerk-cum-Typist:

Educational Qualification: 12th (+2 stage) or its equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate. 50% marks is not to be insisted upon in case of SC/ST/Ex-serviceman and for candidates who are Graduates.

Technical Qualification: Typing proficiency of 30 w.p.m. in English / 25 w.p.m., Hindi on computer / type writer.

Selection Process:

Apprentices:

The selection will be based on the percentage of marks in matriculation (with minimum 50% (aggregate) marks) plus ITI marks.

Junior Clerk-cum-Typist:

GDCE for the post of Junior Clerk cum Typist will consist of Written/Online examination,
Typing skill test, verification of certificates and medical examination.
