Online Fraud: Woman Lost Rs 40,000 After Cancelling Movie Ticket.

Online transactions look easy and hassle-free, but at the same time, have disadvantages. As online transactions are increasing in India, cyber frauds are on the rise. According to a report, 2,059 cyber fraud cases were reported in 2017-18 with a total worth of Rs 109.6 Crores. Cyber fraud cases in 2016-17 were 1,372 costing a total of Rs 42.3 Crores.

The main reason for the increase in cyber fraud is the lack of awareness among the common man. Many people are still not aware of the fact that they are not supposed to share card details and CVV. In this blog, we will discuss a real-life incident of a woman who lost Rs 40,000 after cancelling a movie ticket online.

Online Fraud: Woman Lost Rs 40,000 after Cancelling Movie Ticket

A woman from Lucknow had booked 4 movie tickets for an evening show through a popular movie booking website on March 30th. Later, due to some reason, she cancelled the ticket within the specified time. But, she did not receive the refund for the cancelled ticket. So, she called up the customer care of the ticket booking website.  But, she did not get a proper response from them, instead, the customer care executive shouted at her.

After sometime she received a call from a person who introduced himself as an agent of the ticket booking website. The caller said that he would help her get a refund for the cancelled tickets and he asked her to provide debit card details. As soon as the call ended, she received a message from her bank saying that Rs 40,000 has been debited from her account.

Vishing has become a very common fraud that is taking place in India. A lot of people have fallen prey to vishing and lost hard earned money. In case of this fraud, everything starts with a call from fraudsters who claim to be representatives of some company.

Fraudsters speak in such a way that people don’t have any doubts or suspect fraud. To make it look real, they verify all the details of the victims. After that, they ask them to provide personal banking details like card number, expiry date, and CVV to go ahead with a particular request.

Once all this information is offered, fraudsters will ask victims to verify their services by providing the OTP that had been sent to their phone. Using the OTP, fraudsters will wipe out money from victims bank account.

How to avoid such fraud?

1. In case you need to contact customer care of any company, make sure to collect customer care number from the official website. Do not simply call up the number which comes up on Google.

2. Never share personal banking information like card number, expiry date, CVV and OTP to anyone over the phone. You should always remember that no banks or reputed institutions will call asking for personal banking details.
