As Reserve Bank of India announces to introduce a new Rs 20 currency note with additional features, here is a look at new vibrant currency notes, the country has seen since demonetization.

We may expect the newest member of banknotes on the line of new Rs 2000 notes as Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announces to introduce a new Rs 20 currency note with additional features.

New currency notes are being introduced since November 2016 under Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. These are different in size and design compared to the notes issued previously.

The central bank has already issued new look currency notes in the denominations of Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 500, besides introducing Rs 200 and Rs 2,000 bank notes.

Here’s a look at how our currency got rebranded

Two years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would cease to be legal tender in a surprise television announcement. Going by the volume, it applied to 86 per cent of the value of all currency in circulation.

Without going into the heated argument of whether demonetization did any good or not, we will focus only on the new look of the new series notes that replaced the old series ones.

It should be noted that the currency notes, except for banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, issued under old series continue to remain legal tender.
