If you are someone who likes to travel with a spare phone or simply pack your laptop or tablet in the checked baggage then you will no longer be able to do so while flying to the US. The US Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration has banned the transport of Li-ion batteries and devices that have them in aircraft cargo. This means you can’t pack your phones or laptops or other Li-ion battery powered devices inside the suitcase and check in the aircraft. You will have to carry all your electronics with you on your carry-on bag with you during the flight. Like it or not, you will have to carry the weight of your laptop in the backpack around the airport.

This step is to minimise the risk of fire hazard in the cargo area of a passenger aircraft as mobiles and other electronics are being powered by bigger batteries. The same will also apply to smart suitcases with Li-ion batteries. It goes without saying that power banks were already barred in checked baggage. It is highly advisable that passenger read the instructions related to checked and carry-on baggage before flying.

While mobile phone batteries are known to explode, even fully-charged laptop in suitcases can exploded into flames under certain conditions and the fire could instantly spread inside the cargo area of any passenger aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration claimed. In tests conducted by the FAA, a can of dry aerosol shampoo strapped to a fully-charged laptop could lead to a fire easily.

Meanwhile, for transport aircrafts, there is a new rule which mandates that all electronic items should have less than 30% battery charged. So, the next time you get buy a brand new mobile phone or any other electronics item, you will not need a fully-charged device out-of-the-box.
